Home Owners Insurance and NVR

Ok, we are first time home buyers so this topic is new to us. Late bloomers, we know :) I was asked to provide documentation of contact info and a policy within 30 days before closing. What on earth can I provide NVR without an actual policy? A quote? We have all of our other insurance through Allstate and I must say, any claim we have ever made was covered quickly and with ease, so we were going to start with them. Any suggestions? From what I have read, I can get decent insurance for $600/year approximately. But again, this is not my forte! I have not even started this process at all and I'm guessing I should have! No one told, but then again, I never asked. Clearly on my to do list now.

We also just spent the last several hours digging through documents to send to NVR- I knew this was too easy initially! However a little scared on one of the items asked for because it seems too closely related to the NVR freak out last week. Plus the email referenced our April 1st closing date, which we are NO where close to meeting due to starting late and this current polar vortex. I've been waiting to quote the weather channel! Haha!

Any suggestions re: home owners insurance very welcomed!

  1. It's funny I was just finishing my own insurance quote for $558 with my current provider online. I opted to not have the alarm system installed. NVR referred a insurance company that provided a very similar and competitive quote. $600 seems reasonable, but I think it should be lower, especially if you will have Guardian Alarm system. I would deff shop around because it could lower teh closing costs.

  2. Call a company called Westwood. Ryan should have given you this information. They are an insurance company that helps assist new Ryan homeowners find competitive home insurance. These guys really know what they are talking about. YES you will need this info about 30days before. But once you PICK a policy and co. WESTWOOD will carry that stuff over the Ryan and they made it super simple!! And I think $600 is high, mine is much much lower for a brand new home. Any questions just ask me. BUT your Ryan rep should have told you about WESTWOOD Insurance Co. they are great!

  3. Thank you both so much! We have a quote from Westwood for 496 and will be sending over info to our Allstate office this weekend to get a quote from them- so let the pricing war begin!! Our Allstate rep said we will get a "bundle" discount, so anxious to see if they compete with Westwood! The blogging community rocks!

  4. We got quotes from USAA, Allstate, and Westwood. Ended up about the same for all three once bundling discounts were factored in for Allstate and USAA. With similar pricing, we thought it would be easiest to stay with USAA since we have our car insurance through them.

Once we picked an insurance provider that had a quote on file for us, we just forwarded the contact info to the loan processor and things were handled directly between NVR and the insurance company.

  5. I have USAA for just about everything also. I would feel guilty if I don't use them. I will sleep on it. It's between them and Westwood

  6. We also have USAA. They came back with a higher quote for us then Westwood...about $300 difference. Just make sure you are getting enough coverage for the structure of your home just in case something was to happen. Also, thing about the future and that housing costs will/may go up in future. I found with Westwood, there initial quote is low and a really good price, but once you have them give you a quote for around the cost of your home...it goes up...a lot.

  7. Obviously this thread is old but I had to weigh in here. Although they like to claim they are, all insurance companies are not created equal. Honestly, I deal with different insurance companies every day (work in the disaster restoration industry).
Based on my experience, my top two choices are USAA or Amica. Those are the only two A+ insurance companies in my opinion. USAA is hard because one must basically be military or have parents who are USAA members; I believe anyone can get Amica.
